Our Mission Statement
The majority of Georgians believe that responsible gun ownership is compatible with gun safety when supported by common sense regulations to ensure public welfare. We are a diverse and bipartisan coalition who find common ground in common sense solutions to reduce gun violence. Our members include emergency room physicians, pediatricians, psychologists, educators, faith leaders, community leaders, parents, and, importantly, many gun owners.
In Georgia and nationwide, gun violence rates have increased almost 20% over the past 15 years and in 2020 became the leading cause of death in children. While this is a multi-faceted crisis, several policies have proven effective in reducing gun violence rates in states across the country, and we believe that Georgians deserve the protection these modest regulations afford.
The problem is dire, the need for action is acute, and there are proven measures that can help mitigate this crisis while protecting the Second Amendment rights of Georgia’s citizens. Specifically, we implore the legislature to:
-
Pass safe storage laws, including specific protections for children
-
Ensure that all gun purchases and transfers are subject to background checks
-
Create mechanisms to identify and prevent firearm purchases by individuals who are at risk for illegal or violent activities with guns, including domestic abuse and self-harm
-
Funding for hospital and community based violence intervention initiatives
