Week of Action!

Friday, March 28 Action Alert

To go along with our press conference and our video messages to legislators, we will reach out to state leaders with the message that their response to the Apalachee High School shootings is simply NOT GOOD ENOUGH!

Contact:

Governor Brian Kemp

(404) 656-1776

Speaker Jon Burns

jon.burns@house.ga.gov
404.656.5020

Lt. Governor Burt Jones

burt.jones@senate.ga.gov

(404) 656-5030

Sample Script:

"I am calling today to express my disappointment and outrage that the Georgia legislature has done nothing to address gun safety in this legislative session following the worst school shooting in Georgia history. Firearms are the leading cause of death for children in Georgia and safe storage laws have proven to reduce childhood firearm death and injury in other states. There is a proven method to combat the leading cause of death in kids and Georgia's lawmakers are refusing to take action. Inaction is inexcusable. Please do something now to promote safe firearm storage in Georgia."

Thursday, March 27 Action Alert

Please reach out to the Senate and House Appropriations Chairs in support of funding for safe storage education.

Contact information:

Senate Appropriations Chair Blake Tillery

(404) 656-5038

blake.tillery@senate.ga.gov

House Appropriations Chair Matt Hatchett

(404) 463-2247

matt.hatchett@house.ga.gov

Sample Script:

"Safe storage saves lives and firearms are the leading cause of death for children in Georgia. Educating and encouraging Georgians to keep their firearms locked up and inaccessible to children is something that Georgia should promote. A minimal investment in a safe storage education campaign can save precious young lives and encourage responsible gun ownership in our state. Please include funding for a safe storage education campaign in the FY 2026 budget."

Wednesday, March 26 Action Alert

SB 163, Sen. Colton Moore's bill to punish Savannah for passing a vehicular safe storage law more restrictive than state law (pre-emption) was inserted as last-minute amendment into SB 204. This amendment would increase the preemption fine from $500 to $25,000.

SB 204 will now go to the House Rules Committee and could come to a vote before the full house. Please help oppose this mean-spirited piece of legislation.

Contact House Leadership and Rules Committee Leadership:

Speaker Pro-Tem Jan Jones, (404) 656-5072jan.jones@house.ga.gov

House Majority Leader Chuck Effstration, (404)656-5052, chuck.efstration@house.ga.gov

House Majority Whip James Burchett, (404) 656-5024james.burchett@house.ga.gov

Rules Chair Butch Parrish, (404) 656-5141butch.parrish@house.ga.gov

Rules Vice-Chair Rob Leverett, (404) 656-5132rob.leverett@house.ga.gov

Sample Script:

"Late yesterday, the House Judiciary Committee inserted the language of SB 163 into an unrelated bill dealing with district attorneys. SB 163 would drastically increase fees for local preemption of state laws. This subverted the public comment process and unnecessarily punishes local jurisdictions and taxpayers. Do not place SB 204 on the calendar for a full vote."

Tuesday, March 25 Action Alert

Please reach out to the chair and vice-chair of the Senate Finance Committee to ask that they bring HB 79 back up for discussion.

Chuck Hufstetler, Chair of Senate Finance Committee
404-656-0034
chuck.hufstetler@senate.ga.gov

John Albers, Vice-Chair of Senate Finance Committee
404-463-8055
john.albers@senate.ga.gov

Sample script:

"I am calling to urge the Senate Finance Committee to vote on HB 79. This committee passed a very similar bill last session. HB 79 is a voluntary tax credit for gun locks and gun safety classes; it is not a registry of gun owners. Georgia should take a step to encourage safe firearm storage after the worst school shooting in Georgia history. Inaction is inexcusable. Please vote this out of committee so that it can be heard by the full Senate."
